Bunkers in Albania

with 2 comments

‘Bunkerë dhe Schqiperia’ or translated ‘Bunkers of Albania’ is the title of my graduation project at St-Lucas Antwerp. It’s about the 700.000 bunkers that can be found in this small country. They were built after World War II by Dictator Enver Hoxa, who wanted to be prepared for a new war, that never came… Every albanian man should be able to protect his own country was his idea. This huge waste of money resulted in a country being filled with useless bunkers that are very hard to destroy.
During the years, this mushroomlike bunkers started being integrated in the society, they became a part of the albanian life.
I travelled 3 weeks through Albania to see how these bunkers fight against demolition and try to integrate in this amazing country.
